Title: Stackout - a game for GPI's retro Unity Contest
Post by: Izitmee on January 07, 2013, 04:43:45 pm
Hello,

Fabian Smith (http://www.acumen-design.de/blog/) (concept and graphics), Luigi di Guida (http://www.luigidiguida.it/?lang=en) (music and sfx), and I (Daniele Giardini (http://www.holoville.com/games/) - concept and coding) just released the free version of Stackout, a game made for GPI's retro Unity Contest (http://gameprog.it/pages/contestunity2012).

The contest was about making a game inspired by a retro classic, and we chose Breakout. Fabian added a lot of verve with the circus-retro style he created, Luigi created a suprising relaxed and original score, and we implemented an original and somehow "different" gameplay. The game is 3D, but all the GUI and the main menu use the always awesome 2D Toolkit (along with my own open source 2D Toolkit library (http://code.google.com/p/hounitylibs/), which allows to implement buttons and toggles very easily) :) Here is a video of the contest release.

You can also download and play it (Win/Mac) from here (http://www.holoville.com/games/games/stackout/).

Now we're relaxing a while, and then back to work, to implement a lot more stuff and then think about different ways to release it.

Here (http://gameprog.it/pages/unitycontest2012finalists) you can see all the finalists (meaning all the teams that managed to complete their game in time ;))

That looks really nice.   Love the way the blocks break into tiny pieces.

Thanks BumpkinRich. Those are simple particles that use a texture that looks like a block: Fabian came out with that trick and I have to admit it really works nicely :)

Yey! We won the contest :) Now Fabian gets a Unity 4 Pro license (which I already have), and I get a Rain{one} AI license. Hooray! :)

The game looks really amazing. I keep putting off playing it as I'm swamped with work, but I will have to at some point..

Thanks oivoi :) And unikron, waiting is good: we're almost done with a more polished and balanced version to put on Kongregate (within a week, hopefully - and then we'll push it a little more with more features and nicer stuff) :)

I can say nothing but good about Kongregate. They really helped my game reach a bigger audience. Looking forward to getting to play the polished version on Kong.

Does your team has any afiiliation with Wonderputt? The graphics style and soothing atmosfere remind me of it :)

It looks, sounds and plays really great. Congratulations!

Thanks :) And no affiliation with Wonderputt, but it's the second time I see it mentioned in relation to Stackout, and the first time I saw it I found it absolutely wonderful, so I'm happy that Stackout reminds of it :)

You should port this to the Ouya as soon as it comes out. I think it would be a perfect fit :)

And thank you for your work with HOTween.
I am making a game myself and your libraries and visual editor have been a lifesaver!  ;D

Happy to know that HOTween helps :)

We're now working on a much improved version of Stackout, for Android and iOS, so I suppose an Ouya port is definitely a good idea (and thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought about it) :)
