Support / Export animations with nested sprites

I'm building animations in the same style as the spider tutorial.  I am having issues exporting these as assets to use in another project.  I tried saving them as prefabs, but those only seem to support one nest.  If you have a more than one level of nesting it doesn't seem to work.  Anyone have suggestions?
